Elimination of Weapons-Grade Plutonium Production Under the Plutonium Production Reactor Agreement

This program was a cooperative effort with the Russian Federation that reduced the threat from WMDs and halted the production of plutonium by Russia. There were three Russian plutonium production reactors that were in operation at the time. The United States monitored the newly shutdown reactors, as well as the plutonium which they had produced. In addition, the stored plutonium was monitored until it was transferred and became subject to the U.S.-Russian plutonium disposition program.
