Global Health Security Partner Engagement: Expanding Efforts and Strategies to Protect and Improve Public Health Globally: Implementation of Global Laboratory Leadership Program

The Integrated Quality Laboratory Services (IQLS) with Global Laboratory Leadership Programme (GLLP) participants conducted a series of COVID-19 biosafety and risk assessment training workshops targeting laboratory professionals from different counties of Liberia (Montserrado, Bomi, Gbarpolu and Grand Cape Mount, etc). The workshops aimed to deliver a comprehensive training package for laboratory biosafety in the context of SARS-Cov-2 covering the entire life cycle of a sample right from collection, accessioning, manipulation, waste management to final disposition. Concepts discussed included risk assessment, hand hygiene, personal protective equipment (PPE), biosafety cabinets (BSCs), and waste management which are broadly applicable to all the infectious agents handled in the laboratories. Also, there were practical exercises for hand hygiene demonstration and risk assessment to put theory into practice enabling better retention of concepts. The National Biosafety and Biosecurity guide for laboratories, which comprehensively covers all biomedical labs under the one health concept, was distributed to all the attendees and participants were encouraged to use the guideline as a reference document to develop standard operating procedures and biosafety manuals for their respective facilities. A total of 20 participants attended the first training (Sep 30, 2020) including four Clinical Diagnostic labs (one from each counties), 12 lab professionals from district level labs, one representative from the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL), Central Vet lab, National Standards lab and Water Quality lab (Ministry of Health). Training for rest of the counties was continued in the month of October 2020.
