Africa Programme II

This project enhanced African national authorities capacity to draft national implementing legislation and customs officials capacities to identify chemicals relevant to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC). The project also enhanced African States Parties’ laboratories level of technical competence to analyse chemicals related to the national implementation of the CWC, upgraded relevant stakeholders knowledge and understanding regarding process safety management practices, and increased African States Parties’ awareness of the importance of submitting timely and full declarations on national programmes related to protective purposes. Project activities included: technical assistance visits to provide focused assistance to meet the requirements of the requests made by the African States Parties; training of Customs officials on the technical aspects of the CWC’s transfers’ regime; industry outreach via CWC and chemical process safety workshops; analytical skills development courses on theoretical training and hands-on experience; a regional workshop on Article X and issues of regional cooperation in the area of assistance and emergency response; and developing a regional/national emergency response system against chemical weapons.
