Africa Programme III

This project enhanced African national authorities capacity to draft national implementing legislation and customs officials capacities to identify chemicals relevant to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC). The project also raised awareness amongst non-States Parties of the benefits to joining the CWC, and increased African States Parties’ capacity to engage in international cooperation initiatives for the peaceful use of chemistry. Project activities included: a regional National Authority Stakeholders Forum to bring together stakeholders to meet, know, and understand each other better; a regional training course for Customs authorities on technical aspects of the CWC’s transfers’ regime; provision of academic and informative materials on the CWC for universities’ libraries; analytical skills development courses on theoretical training and hands-on experience; and industry outreach via CWC and chemical process safety workshops.
