Asian Senior-Level Talks on Non-Proliferation (ASTOP)

Each year, Japan has been hosting a dialogue that gathers senior government officials in charge of the non-proliferation policies of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member states, China, the Republic of Korea, and countries with a common interest in the security of the Asian region such as the United States, Australia, and New Zealand. Participants discuss various issues related to strengthening the non-proliferation apparatus in Asia with a view to deepening their understanding of desirable non-proliferation measures, the obstacles they would face, and possible solutions.

At the 16th ASTOP, held in December 2020 via teleconference, the group discussed North Korea’s nuclear and missile issues and strengthening export control.
