Belgian Support Programme to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for Safeguards Implementation

Belgium offers a programme in support of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safeguards measures applied to nuclear facilities.

The objective of the Belgian Support Programme is to contribute to the optimization of safeguards measures in accordance with INFCIRC/153 type agreements, together with INFCIRC/540 type protocols additional to the aforementioned agreements. This optimization aims to maintain the efficiency and effectiveness of international safeguards, while at the same time minimizing the burden of the verification activities in the nuclear industry.

One of the tasks performed under the programme is the annual Training Course for Safeguards at Research Reactors, which provides participants with knowledge of research reactor operation and the potential misuse and misdeclaration of such facilities. The first week of the course takes place at IAEA HQ in Vienna, the second week at Belgian Nuclear Research Centre SCK-CEN laboratories in Mol, Belgium.
