Project

Building Capacity for Efficient Disarmament in Africa and Latin America

The project aims to increase the role of women in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and through that promote their engagement in non-proliferation and disarmament in Africa and Latin America. The project will also seek to enhance the implementation of national and international non- proliferation engagements and commitments. The contribution of women experts in these areas is increasingly being recognized in most developed countries, and yet there is still not gender parity on national delegations and in implementation authorities. This gender imbalance is problematic for a number of reasons. The lack of gender diversity hinders international efforts to address the threat of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) effectively. In addition, since high-level decision-making about WMD issues impacts everyone, disproportionately excluding women from this process is inequitable, and it perpetuates unhelpful stereotypes about the “masculine” nature of hard security issues.
