Risk assessments of Tamale Public Health Laboratory (TPHL) and Sakondi Public Health Laboratory (SPHL) using the World Health Organization risk assessment template will be conducted to develop and implement enhanced workflow and safety plans for the laboratories. The Center for Health Systems Strengthening (CfHSS) is proposing to establish a Biosafety Cabinet (BSC) certification in Ghana by supporting two biomedical engineers from Ghana Health Service (GHS)/Ministry of Health (MoH) or Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) to become certifiers in the US. As part of this training, the two trainees will be provided all the requisite calibrated equipment and tools to conduct BSC certification. Upon their return to Ghana, they will certify all BSCs including public health laboratories (PHLs). As a sustainability plan, the services of these BSC certified personnel will be made available to all laboratories (Public, Private and Research) in Ghana. The project aims at strengthening the public health laboratories to properly diagnose diseases of public health importance. Activities include:

  • Maintenance and certification of all biosafety cabinets;
  • Biosafety and biosecurity training for laboratory personnel;
  • Development of a national biosafety and biosecurity policy for Ghana;
  • Establish a biosafety cabinet certification program in Ghana to support annual BSC certification for public health laboratories in Ghana.
