Fissile Materials Disposition

The Fissile Materials Disposition Program has three key objectives: 1) eliminate surplus American highly-enriched uranium; 2) eliminate surplus American weapon-grade plutonium; and 3) implement a bilateral agreement with Russia to eliminate similar quantities of Russian surplus weapons grade plutonium. To support the disposition of excess Russian plutonium, the United States and Russia are working together on technology development of plutonium conversion and nondestructive assay. The United States will assist Russia in starting construction of the industrial scale Mixed Oxide Fuel Fabrication Facility.
