Global Threat Reduction Programme (GTRP) – Plutonium-Producing Reactor at Aktau, Kazakhstan

This project completed the passivization of residual sodium to reduce future fire and environmental pollution risks at the BN-350 reactor at Aktau, Kazakhstan, a Soviet prototype liquid-metal-cooled fast breeder reactor. Additionally, the project safely and securely removed spent nuclear fuel containing plutonium and highly-enriched uranium from the site. Progress was also made to immobilize the contaminated cesium traps stored at the reactor and to undertake radiation surveys to ensure that all significant quantities of fissile material were accounted for. This project ensured the safe and irreversible shutdown and subsequent decommissioning of the reactor.
