Material Management and Minimization (MMM) Program – Convert Program

This program works with civilian research reactors, government entities, and medical isotope production facilities domestically and internationally. Facilities that use weapons-usable material cooperate with the United States National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and experts from the United States National Laboratories to convert their highly-enriched uranium (HEU) fuel and targets to low-enriched uranium (LEU), a material that cannot be used in a nuclear weapon. This includes collaborating with European colleagues and experts from United States National Laboratories to develop and qualify a new high-density LEU fuel to support the conversion of some of the remaining high-flux research reactors.
