Analytical Approach for Biosafety and Biosecurity

The Analytical Approach provides guidance for countries to develop national policies and oversight mechanisms for biosafety and biosecurity. The Analytical Approach for Biosafety and Biosecurity is a modular, scalable step-by-step process that can be used in a nonlinear way by regional, national, or local authorities that:

  • Provides a structure for critical thinking to assist in clarifying and defining country-specific issues, and identifying feasible solutions;
  • Supports risk management for both moderate and high-risk pathogens and toxins using safety and security lenses;
  • Includes practical guidance, overview of common policy instruments, and options for combining them into a national program; and
  • Assists officials to identify and prepare recommendations to decision-makers.
