Radiological and Nuclear Material Detection, Protection, Dosimetry Equipment and Training for Zhytomyrskyi Border Detachment

The objective of the project was to enhance the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine’s (SBGS) capabilities to detect and intercept illicit trafficking of radiological and nuclear (R/N) materials along the border with Republic Belarus and Chornobyl Exclusive Zone, which falls within the responsibility of the Zhytomyrskyi State border detachment. Project activities included presentations and technical training. Presentation topics on radiation sources of ionizing radiation included:

  1. Sources of ionizing radiation – types, parameters, properties;
  2. Types of radioactive emissions and their properties;
  3. Methods of protection against radioactive emissions;
  4. Safety aspects for handling R/N materials; and
  5. The operation of detectors, types of detectors.

Technical training was conducted at one of the SBGS check points with practical exercises on detection, localization and identification of R/N materials, establishment of safety measures, and safe handling of R/N materials.
