Project

Strengthening the UNSGM

The project aims at strengthening the UN Secretary- General’s Mechanism (UNSGM established to investigate allegations concerning the use of chemical and biological weapons). For possible UNSGM missions, the UN maintains a roster of international experts that are listed by the UN member countries. In order to prepare experts for a possible deployment, UNODA, together with the member states, continuously compiles an overview of required training topics and implements it accordingly. Since 2017, the RKI, with the support of UNODA and the Federal Foreign Office, has been organising various workshops on the application of different methods for the identification and characterisation of bacteria and viruses as biological agents, the assessment of the results obtained as well as general preparations for missions. Activities within the project include the preparation of a Hostile Environment Awareness Training (HEAT), the development of an eLearning module about personal protective equipment (PPE) and the organization of a capstone exercise with preceding tabletop exercise to train international roster experts for a possible UNSGM mission. The project goals are based on the action plan of the “Friends of the UNSGM” group.
