World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) Biological Threat Reduction Activities

Canada supported World Organisation for Animal Health’s efforts and mitigated serious biological security threats posed by infectious diseases of animal origin and assisted member countries in their prevention, detection, and response to animal disease outbreaks. These activities included: 1) establishment of a ‚ÄúBiological Threat Reduction‚Äù ad hoc group that develops specific methodologies for veterinary laboratories related to the investigation of suspicious or deliberate biological incidents; 2) assisted member countries that implemented the Performance of Veterinary Services Pathway, which is as key component of both UN Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1540 and the Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA); 3) supported Veterinary Laboratory Twinning projects that addressed biosafety and biosecurity concerns for high consequence pathogens of security concern; 4) supported the OIE’s Performance of Veterinary Services experts that participated in the GHSA Joint External Evaluation process; and 5) conduction of regional biological threat reduction seminars for national focal points to the OIE.
