International Biological Security Programme (IBSP) – Diagnostics of Rabies and Brucella in Tajikistan

These projects completed in 2020 and aimed to promote improved disease control and surveillance of brucellosis and rabies in the veterinary and public health sectors in Tajikistan whilst also establishing improved biosafety and biosecurity practices. Brucella and rabies are both high-consequence zoonotic pathogens which are endemic to Tajikistan and surrounding countries. The project built capacity in modern diagnostic techniques and linked veterinary and human health. Importantly, the equipment and training provided improved biosafety and biosecurity capabilities associated with these and other high-consequence pathogens. A planned review of this long term International Biological Security Programme (IBSP) engagement in Tajikistan has been delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, but will be rescheduled for FY20/21. A follow-on project is being considered.
