National Implementation, Verification and Universality I

This project enhanced the capacity of States Parties in fulfilling their obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) and encouraged non-States Parties to better understand the benefits of joining the Convention and getting more involved in Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) activities. Project activities included:

  • Bilateral technical visits to provide focused assistance to meet the requirements of the requests made by State Parties;
  • National awareness workshops, specialised training courses, and assistance for drafting national implementing legislation;
  • Training Customs officials on the technical aspects of the CWC’s transfers’ regime;
  • Training of national escorts to raise awareness amongst States Parties of their rights and obligations in the conduct of inspections under Article VI;
  • Training of National Authorities for the use of an electronic declaration tool;
  • A field exercise to increase States Parties’ knowledge and understanding of the procedures involved in inspections; and
  • Outreach to non-States Parties who are in a position to influence national actions related to accession/ratification of the CWC.
