Nuclear Weapons Transportation Security (NWTS) Program

The United States Department of Defense provided the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation super-containers to provide ballistic, thermal, and abnormal event protection to a warhead during transport. In addition to United States assistance, the United Kingdom provided 250 super-containers to the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation to provide increased ballistic and fire protection for the warheads being transported.

The NWTS program also funded a project to enhance the ability of the Russian Ministry of Defence to respond to a nuclear weapons transportation accident and mitigate its consequences. This project provided equipment that will enhance:

  • Accident response and emergency operations;
  • Command, control, and analysis of emergency operations; and
  • Access, recovery, and mitigation capabilities.
